brake lights won't turn off

Hey everyone,

I took have this problem where my brake lights stay on even when my car is turned off. I have come to the conclusion based on what limited knowledge I possess that it is my brake light switch, but I have an issue trying to locate where it exactly is on my car. My car is a 1968 Ford Ranchero. I tried to follow the brake pedal up to where the lines are and see one thing hooked up to it that has two wires sticking out the top and lead back under my dash along with a tangled mess of other wires, but I am not sure if that is the switch. I was told it would be in the cab somewhere under the dash closer to the pedal. Can someone help explain where exactly it is. I dont want to cause any more problems by accidentally messing with something that is not the switch.

Thanks,
Chris

Hey there Adonailove,

If I recall correctly, the stoplight switch on your vehicle should still either thread directly into the master or into some type of brass fitting that threads into the master.

According to the attached wiring diagram, your stoplight switch should have a solid green wire and a green with red tracer wire.

Hope this helps.

I figured it would thread into it. According to the images of what is on sale for switch replacements, the part has to be different than what I was looking at. I need to look closer to see if the wires are still right, because this whole thing was a botched up rebuild project for the previous owner and nothing follows the original.

I looked at how the master cylinder is set up online, and I was about to yank out what appeared to be my brake sensor switch, which I guess is different...

Im afraid I may need to pull something out to see the light switch though, because I assume the plunger makes contact with the switch.

And thanks for the diagrams, I always have problems trying to find good ones for my car.

Cheers,
Chris

That doesnt quite look like the one I saw in the catalogues but ill look for it and see if I can locate it. (And I realize this is two months later and I still haven't fixed the problem). College and work makes me too busy to try to look.
