Front Axle CV Shaft Boot Leaking

Guys!!

I have a 2006 F150 4x4 4.6L V8. It looks like the boot from the front axle to cv shaft on passenger side is leaking. How serious is this problem and how much should I expect to spend to fix it? Also, could this be the cause of vibration when braking near 45MPH mark? Any advice is appreciated. I will post pictures soon.

Look above the leaking boot and you generally will see grease from the boot. It, the grease, gets thrown out by centrifical force. Once the grease is gone the bearing will be messed up. If you catch this early you can replace the boot. Otherwise you should replace the axel (with new boots).

Yes thats what I was seeing. The boot from the axle to cv shaft is what I believe is busted. I can see grease all around the boot and I can tell its been thrown all over other parts of undercarriage.

If there is that much grease thrown out of the boot the axel and bearing must be worn from running dry and hot. Look at a service manual (local library or on line) for the removal and replacement proceedure and TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Also note that Ford, and other manufacturers, use a lot of ONE TIME use fasteners in this area. Replace the recommended fasteners. The axel nut for sure has to be replaced as it is a one time use lock nut. The torque specification for this nut is also critical as the torque sets the bearing preload. Any other torque specification should also be used. The manufacturer gives torque specifications for a reason, use them.
