Cover on steering wheel

New on forum. I brought a 2004 Freestar SES a year ago and have been trying to remove the steering wheel cover to check the clock springs. The cruise control is not working. No dash light comes on, nor does it flicker. No bad fuses. All bulbs are working. Horn works. New brake switch. I purchased a manual on cd and 2 original Ford hard copy manuals and I still can't figure out how to remove the wheel cover, nor do the manuals tell how to remove this cover. I know the safety procedures in removing the airbag. I tried to tap the wiring under the steering column, but unsuccessful. Been in the trap door under the wheel also. After a year of trying, I don't want to quit without winning. I really need help on this one. I have all tools, but they don't help me if I can't get the cover off.
Thanks, Fred

I solved my problem. There are 2 round plastic caps on the right and left side of the steering wheel. Pull both caps. By inserting a screwdriver in these holes, you can line up with a 1/8 metal spring. Push hard on the spring and pull on the cover at the same time. The cover is released one side at a time. Found a broken wire in the clock spring. It's been replaced, but the cruise still doesn't work. Will continue to investigate as time allows, and will post.
