ford ranger 86

a friend of mine is using my shop to work on a ranger he bought. had a bad head gasket--replaced the head gasket and put everything back together (i set the timing belt) truck started up and ran fine.. he wanted to go back and replace the timing belt w/a new one. he must have gotten the timing so far off that when he tryed to start it he said the motor made about two rev's--made a strange noise and would not start. i went out and checked it and found that the teeth on the belt at the crank was complety striped off --tore it back down put on new belt(this time i set timing) truck runs but has no power. question - could it have bent valves when it striped the teeth off .. also this a 4 banger 2.3 ltr fuel injection. any help is needed..thanks.

well, being that you own a shop, you should be familiar with the sounds a bent valve can make. the real question is, what caused the belt to shred in the first place? that might be part of the problem. he would have had to get the timing way the hell off to do any real damage on that engine, being it's a single overhead cam.
maybe the ignition timing is off a little due to the previous problem... just throwing out ideas.

According to my book that is not an interference engine so the valves should not contact the pistons. The book also lists 2 types of cam sprockets though, round and square tooth. If the wrong belt was installed it might explain the belt shredding.
