Engine will not accelerate

I have a 97 Taurus GL Vin U that has an apparent timing issue. The engine will only start with the accelerator pushed to the floor and then it starts very hard. when running, the engine will not accelerate past idle with the throttle is opened and the exhaust starts to glow. I have replaced the synchronizer assembly already. It had an erratic signal and the shaft bushing was worn. Nothing really changed. I have not gone any further with diagnosis at this time. It did come to me with new spark plugs and wires. I do know that the fuel pressure and compression are good. This is a junk yard engine so its history is not known. There are no DTC's stored, the catalytic converter is clear.

Thanks!

If this happened right after the synchronizer was replaced double check your work for loose connector/vacuum lines.
The IAC or EGR may be stuck open. Try removing and cleaning them.

These are symptoms of running very rich. See if the oil smells like gasoline..
A typical cause is a bad Coolant temperature sensor.

I've never done one, but I read that there is a sychronizer alignment tool and that they can be installed correctly without it but that it is much more challenging to do so.

I'm certain that Haynes lists the proceedure with the tool.

merccougar93: the vin u engine is the 3.0 'vulcan' v-6 that has a timing chain. It's more likely the camshaft sensor is one tooth off rather than the timing chain being a tooth off.
