98 Contour 2.0 a little erratic on the shifting

1st to 2nd a little too hard but I can live with it

occasionally right around 40 ish and typically going up an incline the trans will go a little wild and down shift and rev and then upshift and be fine....

leaning towards replacing the neutral safety / range position sensor/switch ... agree?

or other thoughts...

also this motor has a miss when it is first started .. which goes away when it is warmed up .. no codes 108k miles, plugs and wires are good

Note this is my daughter's car .. oh yeah .. changing the front wheel bearing .. good times )

thanks in advance
Dan

Does it act like a vacuum leak?
Have you had the transaxle serviced?

Dan,
A couple of months ago I had similar problems, in my 1998 windstar, and replacing my NSS/DTRS/MLPS whatever you want to call it fixed it. There was a time when techs used to say if you have a problem with your ford, replace the Trans range sensor.

As Dominic suggested, when was the last time you had the trans fluid replaced?

Dominick-- negative on the vacuum leak

a little history: picked up the car from a local dealer (that i trust) he had gotten it from a from a family friend -- one owner 108K, had him change the timing belt and i have done a few other things. The vehicle got a tranny by the ford dealer at 45K so I suspect it has not had a fluid change since.

below is the alldata description of the trans range sensor so it certainly seems as though it could be the culprit.

question on the removal and reinstall? calls for a special alignment tool ... in looking around it appears that as long as I am careful the tool is not an absolute necessity... agree or disagree?

I am thinking that step one shoud be to replace the sensor and see if that solves the problem. if yes .. good

then change the fluid and filter.... is there a trans fluid that you prefer? also how do you feel about a seafoam treatment before draining (confession I am a little bit of a fan of the Seafoam trans treatment)

thanks
Dan

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) sends a voltage signal to the Transmission Range (TR) sensor. The TR sensor incorporates a series of step down resistors which act as a voltage divider. The PCM monitors this voltage which corresponds to the position of the transmission range selector lever (P, R, N, D, 2, 1) to determine desired gear and Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) pressure. The TR sensor is located on the top of the transaxle, and also contains the neutral/start, and backup lamp circuits

The TR was my problem, and in the windstar did not require any adjustment.

Here is my thread on the issue.
