Not to get too picky on your post, but I think they started putting them in for the 1979 year. Thanks to emission requirements, they didn't have too much power. They had reliability problems with the turbo and too much under hood heat for the carburetor to handle. In the late 80s, Ford also had a turbo on the 1.6L EXP that wasn't too successful either. If there were a few other gas models with turbos from that era, they escape my memory right now.
A year or two ago, there was a local used car dealer trying to sell a '79 Mustang 4 cylinder turbo Indy Pace car for some exorbitant price. Funny how some people think a few faded decals are worth so much money.
