2009 escape oil cartrage to screw on filter

My Escape with the newer 2.5 4 cyl has the cartrage type oil filter and I heard that not all of these motors are this way some have screw on filters and My question is does anyone know if this is true and can you just change over the oil filter housing? Any part numbers? Thanks

A lot of 2.5 engines of the same year can either take the cartridge (such as yours) or the spin on filter. I saw a Fusion a few weeks ago where the filter book said the car could take either a spin on or cartridge filter. Really the only thing that determines that is what filter block was installed on your vehicle. You can hit the salvage yards looking for the spin-on filter block (remember you'll need a new gasket to install) or you can hit up the parts man at your Ford (or Mazda) dealer and have him look up what parts it takes.
Remember one thing: If you somehow screw up this installation and you do engine damage with this conversion, Ford will not warranty your vehicle, if your vehicle still has a warranty. I'm not a Fram pusher by any means, but since their numbering system is so familiar, your current filter is the 9641 and the spin-on conversion filter would be the 3614.

Thanks for the reply I did get the part number and it is BS4Z-6881-A for housing and the gasket is 1S7Z-6840 AA
Also thanks for the CORRECT spelling for cartridge. My brain fails from time to time. Also yes ford will not approve this change whatsoever. (They can but we can't)

I've done a few of these cartridge oil changes on the 2.5 engine and I can assure you that they are messy. As far as a less messy filter change, GM's eco-tech cartridge oil filter has Ford's 2.5 cartridge oil filter beat. If you do this conversion, the oil changes will be cleaner and, IMO, there will less chance of leakage right after an oil change because you don't have to worry about the finicky O-ring. The spin-on filter will be less expensive also, but the only way you'd ever pay this off is if you found a real inexpensive filter block at a salvage yard.

I like how easy it is to change the oil on my (cartridge type) 2009 2.5l Escape, plus the location is very nice.

When you change the filter, the new one comes with a new O-ring for the drain screw.
After you drain the oil, remove that screw and drain the filter..
Trying to keep from spilling a full can-filter is a PITB.

I hate it when a spin-on can-fliter is on too tight! Especially on cars where the filter is located
in a place where you can't even see it!
