A4LD 4 gear Transmissions Question
Can anybody tell me for certain if A4LD transmission internals of an AWD are same as those in an A4LD with a 2RWD?
All else is same statictically, Engines, yr of Mfg, DSO/Plant, Type of Vehicle, etc.according to both vehicle VINs. Both these Aerostars are 4.0L Cologne V6 engines & A4LD A/Trans, etc etc
It appears to me only difference is AWD transfer is case siamesed where Tailshaft Housing bolts to Main Transmission Case on RWD. It otherwise seems all else it the same to me.
So can I take an A4LD with a crapped out Transfer Case & install an output shaft & related parts + tailshaft housing from a RWD on an AWD unit, ending up with a functional RWD A4LD A/T ? If so, I've 2 good A4LDs to use to repair 1 RWD A4LD going bad.
It's developed problems in Drive/3rd gear. Sometimes it slips out of 3rd & overrevs on light acceleration, or when accelerator's lifted slightly, or "breathed" like when in traffic. Sometimes it fails to engage D/3 coming from Intermediate/2 going into Drive/3 unless accelerator is hard peddled. At full throttle it has no problems. When in Cruise Control is has no problems either.
I hear a "new" whirring sound when it's seeking Drive/3rd @ 100 to 200 rpm over usual/ normal "upshift" rpm. Yet everything else like Lo/1st into Intmead'/2nd, or Drive/3rd into OD/4th remain good, clean, solid, normal timed, upshift with no problem or question.
Generally I drive lightly & breathe my accelerator, seldom using my brakes. I prefer to lift & fall back rather than run up on & brake for traffic ahead of me. I generally go 80-90K on brakes & pads &
seldom have drum or rotor problems. I've very few other problems also because I keep after this vehicle.
There's no slipping, chatter, burnt ATF, worn linkages/ TVR or other normal problems. As stated above it's only 3rd when Torque Converter ought to be locking or locked.
Any knowledgeable input will be greatly appreciated here. I'm not a newbie by any means but I am definitely lost & very confuse by this problem explained above. I'm sort of convinced 1st part, about use of A4LD transmissions, either AWD less Transfer Case, & RWD with Tailshaft & Hsg are virtually interchangeable, if all else is the same. At least into a 2wd vehicle.
Obviously ECU's for AWD are lacking in a 2Wd vehicle. But I am done with AWD on A4LD Unit. My installation will be otherway.
Thanx for reading this I already appreciate you took time to.

Basically all A4LDs are pretty much the same, but that does not mean all parts interchange. Main differences are that the bigger the motor, the more clutches there are and the more heavy duty the planets became. Also, later units used beefier planets than earlier units.
If you have one from a smaller motor, you can beef it up with parts from one from behind a larger motor. There are some quirks, though, that one must be aware of to get the correct parts that will work as not all parts from one will necessarily fit into the other without major hair pulling.

Thanks, mmerlin,
I understand what you're saying. I am aware there's differences between years & all too. From what I can determine I think I can get away with converting an AWD to an RWD using what I have on floor in my shop. I've a spare Transfercase & a broken one also. And I have solid A4Lds & one I'm running which started giving me problems.
Both [in fact all] I have are from behind 4.0L Colognes & non are later than 95 which I understand is before "changes" & upgrades to concur with OBD II PCM etc. etc. I sort of accumulated them as spares as time went by.
I'm going to try to set one up that was AWD by swapping output shaft & housing & what ever else it seems to need to RWD style. The numbers on both are the same, both are from '95 XLTN's.
I appreciate the reply.

Only three things you need to be aware when swapping shafts: 1) 4X4/RWD, 2) speedo tooth count, and 3) bushing/bearing for overdrive shaft. As long as those are correct all shafts work in all A4LDs.

have a ford 2.9V6 (cologne) with an automatic gearbox type A4LD.
The kick down switch triggers two relays. One holds the kick down solenoid enabled for as long as the switch is closed. The other relay is a 'timer' relay, closing only for about half a second, and is connected to a second solenoid (I assume for more initial magnetic power). Anyone has the correct wiring for this timer relay? In the haynes manual, the relay is represented with 3 wires only: Brown, black/white, black/green. The relay I have, has a 4th wire black/blue. Any idea?

Hijacking someone else's thread does two things. First, gets you ignored by a segment of readers. And two, gets you lost in the shuffle with the rest of the crowd.
To get the best answers, ALWAYS BUT ALWAYS start your own thread. No one will ignore you and no one will accidentally miss your question.
