Rust Converter
To All,
While searching for a good rust converter, I bought some "Rust
Check" at Canadian Tire. It has the right ingredients, but it
doesn't seem to work.
The rust converters I have seen on YouTube are a white cream that is
applied to a rusty surface and slowly turns black over a period of
15 minutes or so.
The theory is phosphoric acid converts the ferric oxide to ferric
phosphate, which adheres to the surface and protects it from further
rusting. The process takes a while to permeate throughout the rust.
The "Rust Check" from Canadian Tire is a liquid, and it immediately
runs off the surface as soon as you apply it. So it doesn't stay
long enough for the reaction to take place. In fact, it seemed to
have little effect on the rust.
Does anyone have experience with a rust converter and can tell us
which one works the best? Preferably, the product should be also
available in Canada.
Rust is a major problem that affects all of us. It would be very
nice to find a product that can stop it or at least slow it down.
Thanks,
Mike

POR15....it's the best rust converter I've ever used.
Be sure to read the instructions carefully, most people over prep the surface, it likes rust, it may chip off on bare metal. BTW: If you get it on your skin you'll be wearing it for a week or two until it wears off....(don't ask haha)

Thanks for the recommendations. I will check them out and see if any do what I need. My problem is my tools like to develop rust when I don't take care of them. Hammers, pliers, hex bits, and all kinds of small things that want to rust away when I'm not looking. Then, when I go to pick them up and use them, I have to stop and clean the rust off. I oil them but that doesn't last, so I'm hoping to find a better solution. I'll try your sugestions and see if anything fits the requirements. Thanks, Mike

on my older tools that are not chromed, I use used motor oil...let the soak and then wipe them of and put them away, you can also put them in plastic bags as well

i don't think por-15 is a "rust converter". it stands for "paint over rust". no doubt that it is a great product though. i've used rustoleum brand rust converter with some success. it is the kind that you brush on and turns the rust black and stops it from spreading.

Before you buy POR15 burn your money. Its that worthless of a product. I bought it for my 97 f350. Did the prep work just like the rep told me to,did all the cleaning and prepping that they recommended and in 6 months the rust was coming back through and in one year it looks worse than before I did it. NOT worth the money. Now I blast and acid etch primer then epoxy over that.

If looking for a rust product, do yourself a favor and go with Master Series. I have been using it for 15 or more years I know. Do a google search for my name and Master Series, I have posted a lot about it. I always get positive feedback from others that take my advice.

I stopped in a nearby autozone last week to pick up a box of nitrile gloves, and for five or six bucks picked up a 8 oz bottle of Rust-oleum Rust reformer. Some paint is bubbling up on the wheel wells of my Crown Vic, and moreso on my windstar.
It turned the rust black, so hopefully it works well.
I went to the rustoleum website to get some information on the product before I wrote this, and discovered that they now market automobile touch up paint for years 1997 and newer.
