fake vinyl?
so, the time has come for me to start the prep work on my fairmont's body. i have to remove the vynal because it won't match the new color, and it's torn up...
i know there isn't any rust holes under it because my headliner is just cardboard, and i don't see any signs of moisture in it...
the question i have is; is there any way i can make fake vynal?
i've thought of using wrinkle coat, and then painting it the new color. i've even thought of using like rubberized undercoating, or bed liner, but i think a light coat of wrinkle would be beter for the look.
i use to hate the vynal because the one i had before this didn't come with it, but now i can't see my car without it... i was gonna use a semi-gloss paint for the final layer...

Try this LizardSkin® Spray-On Insulation : Lizardskin or some other heavy duty spray on bed liner.

I could see Rocker Guard possibly working, as it is paintable and could possibly give you the look you want. HOWEVER, what happens down the road when you change your mind, aren't you creating more work for yourself?
Sure, sure, sure, you Men don't change your minds as often as we Women do. UNTIL a free T-5 falls into your lap at the In 'n Out and ya find yourself rippin' that C-4 you just installed in the '40 out.
My point is - Isn't that going to prove to be a bit of a pain in the ... job to undo? Just playing Devil's Advocate with ya now.
"If" it were me, I'd either do the Original Vinyl Roof, the proper way or just clean it up and paint it, either to match the body colour or an offset colour to compliment the body colour.
You know Less is More kinda deal, that way "if" you do change your mind down the road it's not such an issue to deal with.
Food for thought.... Hope this helps.

thanks for the ideas dom!
miss I, it's actually because i have chrome strips going across the roof to seperate both pieces of vynal with the paint between them. i just don't feel like cutting the clips that hold them down, welding in the holes left behind, and grinding it flush. it just seems quicker to me, and i do know what you were saying, but that's why i want something to look like the vynal. i'm not sure if i'm gonna keep the interior the same, so i don't know what color to paint those sections. if i leave the interior the tan it is, then i'll try to match the old vynal. otherwise i was gonna make it satin black, and the interior was gonna be black too...
keep in mind i'm deffinatley gonnna paint the main color "Kona Blue". same as the new mustangs, and the same color brought back from the 69-70 mustang...

actually opinions would be nice on which color would compliment it...
oh, and incase you can't remember what shade the top is now, or the interior, you can just look it up in one of my fearmont albums...

I'm sorry. It's that Canadian accent again 'eh?
What I was politely trying to say to you is short cuts lead to long delays. If you take the easy route and use a spray on instead of the real deal, it may be more work later on down the road. It also, pardon my bluntness, and please know that no offense is meant by this, may end up looking like crap.

As for the chrome trim, isn't that held on by nuts or clips that are accessible under the interior headliner? Just my opinion, mind you, but it would seem to me that the cost factor and the amount of time spent to properly fill in those holes would be less than the cost factor and amount of time spent applying something to make it appear to be Vinyl. Another option, would be to paint it and still leave the chrome trim on, I would think that it would be possible to tighten down either the trim nuts or clips.
I can't recall exactly if Eric's Fairmont originally had the Vinyl Top or not, I'm sure he either told me or I read it, just can't recall right now, my point is, his is painted black to compliment the body colour, and it looks freaking HOT!
Again, just my opinion, if you are painting the body in Kona Blue, then I think that black would compliment it quite nicely, furthermore, "if" you painted the roof portion instead of a spray on vinyl deal, that a streak of Kona Blue, much like Eric has done with his main body colour, would most definitely make it look HOT too!

oh, i planned on the streak. it belongs there. i also planned on re-applying the pin stripes like they did at the factory. i have thought of just removing the strips anyways, as i have just pulled the last of it off the front half, and found a quarter sized rust spot above the windsheild, with a pinhole that i think if i can clean it up enough, i can just fill it in with the welder, might as well do the rest of the roof...
i think i'm gonna go with the original paint scheme, it's hard to explain, but...
here. my original idea only blue not brown http://stuartscustoms.freeyellow.com/PlainCars.html top one
my current idea http://fzbooks.150m.com/80FuturaBrochure01.html but with the black being the blue, and the silver being a satin black...

Now that's HOT! Boss choice!
Oh and I owe you a THANKS. Couldn't quite pick a colour for the '40, but after seeing that Kona Blue, the decision wasn't too hard, tho I think we'll go with silver accents and ghost flames.
