Driver side half shaft seal leak

I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping to avoid this one. But I know since I only have 4500 miles on my Escape it will take a while to find out. Does anyone know how wide spread the problem is or certain build dates apply ?

From what I've heard it usually takes 7500 miles or more to develop the leak. I'm curious to know if there are many 09's out there with high mileage that haven't had the problem.

There sure was a lot more activity on this issue on the old site. Maybe this problem has slowed down . I'm sure most of the 09's are past the 7k or 8k miles for the leak to show up. I'm hoping the last TSB is the answer.

Not mine! I'm only around 3,600 miles. I might have a PTU leak. No drips but I wiped it clean a couple of weeks ago. Hoping it might just be the vent bolt problem.

I'm not sure the 10's have the LH issue but maybe the PTU .

The '10s may have a right side intermediate shaft seal leak. There was that one owner that had the seal replaced eight times and two shafts. It was in Canada, the dealer bought the vehicle back and they left with a F-150 4x4 with no loss in money.

Any 09's out there with over 10k miles that haven't had the left hand haft shaft transmission fluid leak ? I'm still under 5k and wonder what my odds are .

I have 18000 on my 2009, I checked for leak last oil change I did and it was still dry.

09 Escape V6. Around 3000(3-09) miles I reported a leak on the left output shaft. Dealership told be Assembly Lube. ~6000(8-09) miles went back and they replaced shaft seal. Leak continued. In November still leaking, went back, they replaced case, bushing shaft and seal, Had it down in shop 2 1/2 weeks. During winter unable to detect leak, lots of rain..., Feb10 back in for a leak different dealer, Vent plug loose, Late April,10 now back to the left shaft and seal...blaming first dealership. WHAT GIVES!

When I was at my dealer today having the customer sat recall transmission flash done I asked the service writer about their experience on the half shaft leak. She said for awhile they had a lot coming in and many with low mileage but the pace has slowed down to trickle . She said apparently the problem is very random and by no means affect the majority . For what it's worth ?

The LH half shaft leak TSB 10-05-10 has been superceded with 10-09-04. I don't have a copy of the earlier one but it states only a part number change. I'm not at all for sure about that as I remember something from the procedure about checking the half-case, maybe possible loose bushing pocket.

I think that they changed the procedure slightly to remove the half-case inspection and removed it from the parts list.

I think mine has the issue it is wet arround tranny and on the axle mine was built in March/09. Not to where it is dripping but you can see the wetness from looking down from the top mine has 7080 miles on it. My dealer said it was undercoating what a joke.
My parents have a 2010 Escape 3.0 limited 4wd and they have 10,000 miles on theres and it is dry.

I wonder where they found red undercoating that stays wet ....
I'm at about 4700 miles on mine (build date 1/09 KC ) and keep expecting to have the issue any time .

When it comes to oil seals in general, a small bit of wetness enough to attrack dirt is acceptable as long as it doesn't drip. The seal lip needs a bit of lubercation itself. If it's dry, it will wear out quickly.

Yes , but Bill , it sounds as if LORAIN has fluid on the axle and case as well .

Well, if it's running down the case, it will start dripping later on.
