Is the ticking under the hood or inside the cabin? Does it matter how fast the fan is running? Does it stop when you unplug the compressor?

Yes ticking coming from under the hood. Yes it seems when fan moves faster it dicipates a little. Haven't tried to unplug the compressor. Where will I locate the compressor connection to unplug.

On that there should be a single wire near the top of the compressor that will have a connector in it. You can accomplish the same thing by just shutting off the system at the dash control head. Give the belts a good look over too. I have seen old V belts make some pretty strange noises before. That old York compressor is usually pretty reliable so unless one of the rods inside is shot it shouldn't make a noise.
