overheating update

so I just started school and was finally able to get around flushing my cooling system. Tonight I took tstat out, put a hose in the reservoir and disconnected the lower rad hose and closed the end.let car idle and after the temp gauge got to the middle, steaming (and I mean steaming) hot water started coming out of the radiator, and the steaminess went down after a few minutes. during this whole time the gauge stayed in the middle and car did not overheat. Also, the water pretty much came out clean. so.....

can I assume my water pump is fine and there is no blockage since there was water was flowing and it was steaming!!!

could my overheating problem simply be bad coolant? or maybe the radiator is old and is not cooling anymore (which would make sense why it overheats on freeway too)

ps. what kind of coolant should I get? I was thinking green preston.

thanks in advance.

I forgot what you were working on.
Taurus?
I'd take it to a Radiator shop and have it flow checked.
Could be a lot of things Water Pump impeller rusted off, radiator could be shot or maybe you system just isn't bled correctly electric fan kicking in?.
I doubt if it is your coolant.

Water has to cycle through the water pump or it may be damaged along with the engine, from what you explained you did not flush the system properly and may have starved the engine from fluids..... See my link.

Cheap/fast way to flush a cooling system

oops, I keep forgetting I haven't put my signature yet..sorry. it's a 2000 cvpi. 145k miles, custom race pipes.
fan runs at full speed when flushing, but does not kick in when driving. coolant temp sender, switch and sensor are fine.
and i thought the pump wouldn't be pushing coolant or water if the impellers were corroded, so I assumed it is okay since it was pushing water when flushing.
