I have a 2002 Windstar and the AC compressor cycles on and off when the AC button is on (amber light lit) or off (amber light not lit). The AC worked fine during the summer. It probably works fine now but it's winter so hard to say. I beleive it has always done this in the couple of years that I've had the van. Just wondering if this is normal or not and why it would be happening?

Do you have your heat selector set to defrost? An AC compressor will engage when the heat is set to "defrost" to dehumidify the air directed at the windshield.

On most Fords only two position the ac does not engage. Vent and Floor

I checked last night and it does only turn on when defrost is selected in one form or another. Thanks guys, I've had so much trouble with this van it's good to hear that it's doing something it's supposed to do! I appreciate the info.
