What experience have you had with auto mechanics? Start with a test of the pressure in the A/C system. As stated above the low pressure switch would prevent the A/C compressor from engaging if the refrigerant pressure is low, or zero. If the pressure is low then there is a leak in the system as the A/C system is a sealed system. If there is more than 20-30 PSI in the system then check the connection at the clutch coil for battery voltage (12 volts+/-). Generally if the system pressure is below 20+/- psi then the low pressure switch will not let the A/C engage. Look at the A/C connections for black oily dirt. This is the sign of a leak as the A/C oil is very fine and attracts dirt. Look at the condenser, in front of the radiator, for black oily wet spots, that is leaks. Try the defrost and see if the A/C is activated. You can get a simple pressure tester at an auto parts store for a few dollars, or borrow a set of gauges from someone you know. try these few3 things and get back to us. Added thought: read up on how the A/C system works in you vehicle either on line or at your local library. Identify the parts of the system and what they do and how to identify (diagnose) problems.
