Hey Poppy

Or anyone else in NY/NJ. What is with these car parks where the cars are stacked 3 to 4 high. How does that work? What if your car is on top and you need to go somewhere?

Been here for 2wks and this has been bugging me.

Cars in the Garden Street Garage in Hoboken, N.J., are moved between seven levels on vertical lifts at 420 feet per minute. The total volume of the garage is less than one-half that required for a conventional ramp-accessed facility.

Something like this is only a viable option when property is in short supply, or the property values are so high that they could not be profitable as a parking garage otherwise.

Here's an article with more options and more information.

No one has ever stopped me from pumping my own gas, and 99% of the time, I'll let the gas station attendant do his or her job. I assume that they are doing it because they need the money. Some people in NJ also have people come and clean their homes, kinda like royalty

Crazy? I guess you like getting out of your toasty warm car when it is -10 degrees F outside, and grabbing hold of that gas filler nozzel that is also -10 degrees. I like staying inside my heated car in the winter, and air-conditioned car in the summer. Crazy? Yeah, but that's just me.

We have full service pumps at some stations here if you wish to have your warm car in the Winter put the price per gallon is more. I was just reminded of an old Delorean owner that I know that lives in NJ, I remember when we had the crazy rise in fuel prices a while back that he was paying more per gallon than we were, must be the attendant fee for pumping your gas so that extra cash per gallon I save is nice.

No it is crazy that they will not let you pump your own fuel when the rest of the USA can pump their own fuel.

The whole not pumping your own fuel law is designed to stop top offs and spills, and also prevent drive offs, in two ways, leave without paying, and leaving with the damn hose still in your vehicle.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years if more states make similar legislation. BTW, did you know in Europe you can't even change your own oil? You have to take it somewhere by law.

Hell yeah I do!!!! by the way, you can avoid the whole -10 nozzle deal by wearing gloves lol.
but yeah, i don't mind filling up when it's -20, just means the fuel is more dense...

I have driven through most of our fifty states and a couple of Canadian Provences.
I noted that most stations charge more or less at the full service pumps vs the self serve pumps. I do suspect however the price difference from one state to another, is more related to the following:

1. delivery/shipping costs from the refineries
2. STATE taxes, (and in some instances CITY taxes)
3. the cost of the property for the gas station, and their local taxes
4. the relative wealth of the community

Frankly Mark, I could not care less, that Wisconson allows a dispartiy in prices for self serve vs full serve, and that SOME (as you stated) offer full serve. IMO there should be a requirement that ALL stations offer the option of full serve. Period! I have found that many times when traveling out of state I had to leave my vehicle, go inside and pay in advance or swipe my card, then go out to the pump, pump it and go back inside to sign, or to get a receipt, or my change. At many places there was no full serve option. Big deal for me? No I have full use of both of my legs. However... what about these guys?
The Pump Guide - by Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America brought to you by the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
People living with severe disabilities, especially wheelchair-users, must often find creative solutions to life's everyday obstacles. "The Pump Guide" is a collaboration between the nonprofit sector, business, and government that solves a problem created by the growth of self-serve gas stations. For the disabled driver, fueling a car or van can be difficult if not impossible. That mechanical process can intimidate drivers who choose not to travel in Michigan due to "fear of fueling".

EVERY station in NJ provides full service. not just SOME.

The next time you want to slap my state in the face you had better have a better argument. OR at least have a reason to do so. We haven't touched on security issues and forcing your mother out of the relative secuirty of her car to pump her own fuel and having to go pay for the fuel that she just pumped.

Jonzo,
The gas is going to be pretty much the same temp in the summer and winter because it is stored underground somewhere in the 60's degrees, only the handle will be particularly cold. AND it will not be more dense if you get out of your warm car and pump it or if a paid attendant pumps it for you.

So if you think that NJ is crazy, and disrespectful to its disabled veterans, that's your opinion.

Unfortunately it becomes a safety risk for the attendants (double edged sword really I guess). I had a station manager beaten within inches of his life (sorry I forget which station right now) over the money he had to carry on him to make change for customers. However, I do like having the option of full serve, but I also like to do it myself, luckily the stations in our area all have Pay at the Pump so you don't have to futz with going in. I agree Poppy it can be safer for the customer though. I've also had managers shot for not opening the safe (that was just stupid), but luckily not life threatening.

every station i've stopped at around the country has had at least 1 pump solely made for handicapped individuals. they pull up to the pump, and there's a button they can push from their window.
the only reason i don't like full service is i've had every one of them try to screw me over.
-2 quarts low? i think i would have noticed that within the last 300 miles in death valley...
-flat tire? that's ok i have a full size spare.
-power steering is low? I have a manual rack and pinion buddy.
-radiator leak? show me, i can braze it right now.
- your exhaust seems kinda loud? well i guess since it has 4'' pipes, it's gonna get that way...

i do admit, they're not all like that, but i just got tired of it. all the disabled vets i know would rather do things themselves, than let some punk kid make them feel inferior. i should know I was one for 2 years. rehab is great

NcFurnitureman is on a distinguished road
No pump for handicapped individuals around here but I have seen (and have done it myself) multiple occasions where people will help the handicapped or elderly person next to them at the pump. I guess in this day and age you could be sued if something went wrong. The local station I frequent charges 3cents more than one 2 miles away but I buy gas there because they know me and let me fill up and then pay with cash. I refuse to prepay because I always fill up and I don't know how much it is going to be and I don't use a card. To each his own I guess.
