upgrading sound in my 05 Five Hundred SEL?
I bought my 05 Five Hundred SEL used and the previous owner had replaced the stock head unit with a Sony MEX-BT2800. I'm satisfied with the head unit and even recently added a Sirius tuner to it. Now, since the car was not originally purchased with the Audiophile package I'm thinking about adding speakers to the rear deck. The empty spots there are calling my name! I need some advice on what would be best for me to do. I don't want to change the door speakers, I'm just interested in improving my sound for a reasonable price. Can anyone recommend what type of speakers and/or amp I should add? I'm assuming that anything I add will require an amp or would that be just subs? My head unit has rear/sub out (RCA jacks) that can be switched from rear to sub through the unit's programming menu. I assume the four door speakers are run through the cable harness, right? Or...should I just start by upgrading the four door speakers and see how that sounds?

Upgrading the door speakers I would think would be easier than trying to add two more. Check out Crutchfield, they have an outfit my car feature that allows you to put in Make\Model\year\stereo and it will match speakers that will fit and work with the current head unit, or at least it used to, tonight I'm only seeing the make\model option.

Hey Mark, You wouldn't go buy a car without giving it a road test first. So why do the same thing for car audio. There are a lot of things to consider when purchasing speakers and amps.Unlike Dave who still has his 9volt transistor radio bungee corded on to his headrest, some people still appreciate fidelity. My suggestion would be to take your favorite music selections (something well rounded) and visit a couple of shops and give it a road test.Everbodys hearing is not the same,What sounds good to me may not sound good to you. Also take into consideration just what you want to amplify, like highs or lows.Nothing worse than bass notes rattling your kidneys on a long drive. You might also want to visit a couple of car audio competitions put on by local stereo shops to see what other people have done. Just my 2 cents. I rock with Boston Accustics and Kenwood amps. I'm partial to hearing the fingers sliding on the fret board.

Thanks guys. I decided to do a little of both! Ordered new Pioneer speakers for all four doors and a slim powered Sound Ordinance sub that I'm going to put under the seat. Got the speakers and sub from Crutchfield. Also ordered the Dynamat door kit (from Amazon because it's much cheaper than Crutchfield, like half). Speakers are here, sub and Dynamat due in early next week. Hope to get it all installed by next weekend!
