can't enter personal keypad code 2009 escape

I have followed the instructions several times. After pressing the 1-2 key immediately after entering the factory code I try to put in a personal code. It is as though pressing the 1-2 button does not take it into program mode. Any ideas please?

I don't have an Escape but to do mine all I have to do is input the factory code and then within 2 seconds input the code I want. I don't have to push anything to "set" the system. It also has to be within 2 seconds so maybe pushing the 12 as they instruct is taking longer than it allows.

Ok just went to my info site and got the instructions. Your right, you have push the 1/2 button within 5 seconds then put in the new number. It can hold up to 3 numbers then it will refuse any more. Try clearing out the system to see if that is the issue. Input the factory code then push the 1/2 button and release. Then within 5 seconds push the 1/2 button and hold it for at least 2 seconds. That should erase any codes in there and let you start again. Let me know if that works and if yes, great if not we can try to diag it for you. You can also disconnect the battery but that is a last resort as it resets everything and we want to avoid that if we can.

Looked through my diag info and there is very little on this system. With a factory scan tool I can get into it and see what works and what doesn't but without it not so easy. If the key pad opens the door with the factory code then I would say the module is not accepting new codes rather than the keypad not sending it. So if the battery or clearing the codes didn't help I can only suggest a trip to an electrical specialist.

arent there certain number combinations that it will not accept ? 11111 etc. try a different number even if its not what you want just to verify it will take a number.
