Tire size recommendation for '71 Cougar

I've got a '71 Cougar that is about as much of a plain-jane car as can be. Just to describe it, it's got a 351 Cleveland with a C6, 70K original miles, excellent condition with no rust and it's got.....(drum roll please)......factory original hubcaps.
I plan to buy some Wheel Vintiques Magnum 500 wheels and separately buy some walking cougar center caps to put in the wheels . I know they would not be original styled wheels that came with the car, but I think the looks would compliment it. I'm pretty sure Ford sold a similar looking wheel up to about 1970 on some of their cars. Summit has these and I plan on buying two 15" X 7" for the front and two 15" X 8" for the back.

Any suggestions on what tire sizes I would need?

A 215-65-15 might look sweet. But try one out before you make any purchases. Are you sure it's a 15"wheel on there. My references show 14" wheels.

Hey there Kruser,

Those are some sick wheels you've picked out!

Ummm, original tires for that would have been an E78-14 I think, which translates roughly to a 195/75/14 or a 205/70/14.

Are you wanting to run the same size tires front and back?

If so, I believe that you could safely get away with 225/60/15 which would fit both the 15x7 and the 15x8.

The 215/65/15's Bog mentioned would work too, however, I believe that the over all Rim Width Range for those tires is only 6 - 7.5 which could possibly pose a problem for the 15x8, tho I do not know for sure.

Hope this helps.

I realize that factory would have been 14" tires.
I was planning on 15" tires as a replacement.
I was planning on having the rear tires being just a little wider than the fronts and that's why I was looking for recommendations.
So what are your recommendations? Or, should I stay with 14" tires and wheels?

This will not be a drag strip car, just a stocker with a slight more rumble on the exhaust and a Saturday night cruiser......

If you use 2 different sizes, you loose the ability to rotate the tires.Just a thought.
