Tires--Argh!

I've been looking at tires for the Milan, and i'm getting somewhat annoyed. It seems to me, if you look at any one brand, in a given size, for the Milan it's 225/50-R17, any type of tire will be around the same price! Why is that? Summer tires are not an option in the Minnesota climate, so i'm looking at some kind of All Season. So then you have Passenger All Season, Performance All Season, High Performance All Season, Ultra High Performance All Season, Touring All Season and Grand Touring All Season. All for about the same money. OEM tires would cost me over $800, and i was hoping to sacrifice some performace (since the wife is driving it now and she doesn't care) for some savings. But for any of those types of All Season tires, we're looking at saving no more than $100 for the set. I'm really confused. The difference is so small between each type. Why bother? They might as well just make one kind of "Performance" All Season and call it good! Why FIVE different kinds?! And as for tread life, the Good Year tires we have on it wore out quicker than those on our Fusion (same size wheel and tire, OEM Michelins). The Good Years have lasted under 30,000 miles, while the Michelins have almost 60,000 on them. I don't want to pay 2/3 the price for half the tread life! As I recall, that's what the Good Years cost. I know the value of getting what you pay for, and the cheapies, at around $120-170, all have really low tread wear ratings, so that sounds to me like that's asking to need tires again in a couple of years. And that leaves me back where I started with my $800 OEM tires. Frustrating.

I see and feel your pain. My pickup has 17" ...I have yet found a set of tires that will last more then a year. I had spent more then $250 a piece. Also, for several years there was only 3 tire brands I could choose from.
Today, I dont worry about the truck, it now gets about 300 miles a year.
As for Michelin tires, they last longer then many other brands because they use a harder rubber compound. Nice for long life but you loose traction. They work better on some cars but not all cars / trucks.
In my opinion, I will never buy "Bad Years" (Good Years) for any car or truck I own. They are spendy, dont last...they do hook up nice (big woop if they suck in everything else) and they will not stand behind the popular problem of the steel belts giving out and "Out of Round" right out of the box...sort a speak.
I found my best luck is buying generic brands...made buy the popular tire companies...but a lot less money most of the time. Also, shop in the little whole in the wall places instead of the Big name tire specialists.
Just my 2 cents....not looking to piss any one off !

Yeah, there's a place called Capital Tire here in Shakopee i'll probably use. Linda went to the Good Year place for this current set. Probably won't repeat that.

The only other tire brand i have some experience with is Fuzion. I was really disappointed with how they handled on my Cougar. Probably weren't a "performance" tire though. I didn't do much research that time.

If you have an NTB, Mechant's Tire, Big O, or Tire Kingdom near you you might wanna try them and ask about the Doral: SDL brand they have. They're made by Cooper Tires as an in house tire. They're relatively cheap, probably around ~$125 after the mount/balance fee. I do believe they're all season and I've mounted a lot of them. Of the probably ~250+ four sets I've put on maybe 5 have come back.

Yeah i was going to say look for Coopers I have run them on my F150 for years and years and they last very well. Seems like beyond tread life specially if you take the hour out of a day a few times a year to go back and keep them rotated

Yes, I like Cooper's too. At least for the truck. I never had them on a car before. But they're great in the snow and slush, as well as the rain.
