I know, but would it fit and work like it’s supposed to? I noticed the crease in one is different, but everything else seems the same.

Dimensionally the tanks are inches different. So the answer to your question of:

"but would it fit and work like it’s supposed to?"

is NO. There are replacement tanks available for both vehicles. I get you have a full sized '68 that needs a fuel tank and have found one from a full sized '69. Anything is possible and likely you could get that tank to fit and work. You will need to do some modifications. If you want to do that OK.

Spectra is the largest maker of fuel tanks for FLM products of this era. http://www.spectrapremium.com/products/fuel_tank_assemblies.html
I do not care for their website.

68 and a few years earlier is a F47A tank
    69 & at least '70 is a F27F

Have you thought about the original tank relined?

^^^ Good thought. There are coating products on the market that can restore the tank if not too bad.

Given the amount of time I have left in school, I don’t have the time to clean it, but truthfully I plan on buying another 68 Galaxie project in the future, so I’ll clean it up for that. Would an aftermarket one for a 1968 Ford Custom or Ltd work?

All 1966 to 1968 full sized Ford models will have the same 25 gallon fuel tank in all body styles except station wagon. (C7AZ 9002 A)
Galaxie, Galaxie 500, Galaxie 500 XL
    LTD
    Custom, Custom 500
Full sized Mercury models will work as well.

In 1969 the tank became smaller at 23 gallons.
