I have a 2000 Windstar SEL with the 3.8L and AXOD trans. I am getting ready to replace my transaxle on the right side as there is a ton of slop in the inner joint. When I grab it, I can move it all directions. Side to side, up and down. I am wondering if its the axle or transmission that needs work. Any input is appreciated as I dont want to ruin a new axle or have to tear into it multiple times.

    Welcome to the Forum
I can't really give you much advise on that
They have had a lot of problems with that set up
You may just have to pull the axle shouf out and check it
    It's not an easy job

    Welcome to the FFO!

You said, "there is a ton of slop in the inner joint"
The inner joint is part of the axle half shaft.

You also said, "I am wondering if its the axle or transmission that needs work."
If the inner joint has "slop", the axle half shaft needs replacing based on what you stated. Each half shaft has two joints. Inner & outer.

If one side is bad on a 20 year old vehicle, it is highly likely the other side is close to worn out and replacement should be considered on a vehicle you intend to keep..

Ok, tearing into it today. Can’t seem to get the axle to release from the trans. Even tried a small come along with 1200 lb. cap and broke the cable! Kind of literally stuck here. I’ve done this once before but it was long ago and I can’t remember how I overcame this before. Any info is appreciated as usual.

Did you try spraing in inside CVJ woth some king og lube
    That's where the plronlem is
They get old and stuck in the latch position
Spray it work it around move the inner CV joint so the lube can penetrate it
You may try using a small screw driver to break it loose

    ^^^^ That vid is good.
Instead of constant pressure, impact pressure is needed.
Love tap it and the snap ring should give up the shaft

We got her done! Just had to keep at it a bit longer. The oiling seemed to do the trick.
