Newbie here trying to figure out what's goin' on with the van before we head to the mechanic (or rather trying to fix it ourselves if we can!)

Anyway, we have an 02 windstar with 102K miles.

Sunday, the RPM gauge flipped all the way and won't go back. Today, the gauges started bouncing all over the place and now the speedometer is flipped all the way over. Not good.

Checked all the fuses, and other than dusty, they looked ok.

this van has been chock full of electrical problems. :incazzato: the fuse that controls the compass, the special light on the rearview mirror and a few other things keeps blowing, and the power locks on the driver side? forget about it. :mad2:

Hey there Mickimowse,

the fuse that controls the compass, the special light on the rearview mirror and a few other things keeps blowing, and the power locks on the driver side? forget about it. :mad2:
It sound like you may have a bad ground or possible short in your wiring, if you keep blowing fuses, which could in turn be affecting your Instrument Cluster and causing the other electrical problems.

Are the fuses you mentioned still blowing? How are you checking your fuses? Have you also check the relays and fuses in both the Battery Junction Box (engine compartment fuse box) and the Central Junction Box (interior fuse box)?

This is the forums "How To" on the subject.

I have attached both power and ground distribution and power door lock wiring diagrams for your 2002 Windstar.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info!

We've had some other issues and did some research and many of our problems are listed as possibly related to a recall that was issued at the end of 2009. :nono:

the speedometer stopped working
the cruise going off and on
break problems
ABS light
check engine codes

The recall must have gone unnoticed in our house but taking it in for the recall repair today! :eek6:

from what reading I was able to do, if it starts leaking it can start to short things out which can lead to fire even if the vehicle is off. We have symptoms of a leak. It may be unrelated, sure...but I'm going to look towards a known issue first then investigate other things.

I beleive the recall you are talking about is the speed control switch that screws into the bottom of your master cylinder. It will start leaking break fluid. If the speed control switch is leaking your cruise control will stop working because all that switch does is tell your cruise control to shut off if it sees that you put the brakes on. You will also see your brake fluid level go down and wonder where the leak is. Pull the connector off the switch and take your finger and touch where the connector plugged into the switch and see if you get brake fluid on your finger. If the switch is leaking just go to any ford dealership and they will change it on the spot, if your vehicle is on the recall list. If your vehicle is not on the list buy the part and put it on as soon as possible. It cost between 20-05 dollars. As for your gauges, my 99 windstar did this when my battery was going bad and happend 2 years later when my alternator was going bad. It also effected my windsheid wippers, headlights, heating and cooling fan blowers, lights coming on and off. The van acted like it was possessed. At that time I still had the switch leaking brake fluid all down on the control boxes and wires below it. Don't know if this helps but if that switch is leaking get it changed as soon as possible.

It sounds like the recall problem. I have the same problem, fuse blowing(fuse #10 I believe), instruments going crazy. I disconnected the brake sensor switch from the master cylinder and the fuse stopped blowing and the instruments returned to normal.

Mine happened prior to the recall so I went and bought a new switch and wiring assembly from the dealer and installed it myself. As soon as I hooked everything back up, bam, the fuse blew. I concluded that the cruise control servo box had developed a short from this problem and needs to replaced. I just disconnected the switch from the master cylinder again and I drive around without cruise control for now.
