Hi! I have a 2000 escort zx2 with auto trans.
I try to click the button with my thumb and pull shifter into gear, you know, to the r,n,d,3,2,1 or whatever but it wont even allow me to push the button in with my thumb to release the shifter to go into any other gear! No matter what I do, the shifter wont move.
I know to push the brake pedal before trying to shift it out of park. The brake lights are coming on when I stand at back while someone hits brakes.
I've been manually bypassing it by sticking a piece of metal into the hole to the right of the shifter and pushing down on the piece inside of it. Any troubleshooting process? I got the console taken off. I see how it works, the white plastic piece gets pushed forward by the little rod coming out of the black cylinder and it allows the shifter to move but it wont move the piece at all when I use my thumb at the top of the shifter. Its like its locked. So I do it all manually. A brake switch or something maybe? Any tests anybody know to do to narrow it down? Thanks a lot for the help!

Depending on the build date it is probably an actuator 3z719 or a 7e096 RenderIllustration[1].jpg

Mine did that & a friend taped down the switch for me. Drove it like that for another 3-4 years until I got hit head on last June.
Just remember that it will start in any gear that way.
