2004 Freestyle - Rear Storage Area gets wet, right sliding door doesn't open by buttons

I generally leave my third seat down in my 2004 Freestar SEL for the extra load space. When I raise the rear seat I sometimes have moisture on the part that comes up out of the floor, and the carpet in the hole feels damp, mostly on the right side.

After I leave the seat up for a while, everything seems to dry out. Water seems to be getting in there somehow.

I also have an intermittent "won't open" on the right hand sliding door requiring me to open it manually. Closing the door works using the button on the door frame, or by starting the door closing manually, then the motor takes over and closes it. The Won't Open happens using the button, the overhead button, or the key fob.

If these two are related, could the water that is wetting down the back seat storage area also shorting something out in the switches or relays that activate that door to open?

Thanks,

Not that familiar with the vehicle and the power sliding door.
My guess is they are not related. However the right side part that come out of the floor may need some clarification as to location. Picture!?

If water is getting up through the bottom, there may be some loose mountings or you may need to remove the carpet for a closer inspection.

Generally the intermittent opening door is a switch that is not compeletly open or closed. The operation is sequential using switches to show certain parts of thee system have been accomplished. If opening, the door motor won't open unless unlatched. If unlatched it won't stop until the dorr has reached the fully open position. And the reverse is true as well.

They had plenty of problems with the windstar with the contacts in the sliding door
clean them up or replace
I had to replace a passenger door power lock a few years back on a Windstar, so this brought back some fond memories.

My current door problem has to do with the Right Side Sliding Door, and how the controls do not work to open that door, but all do work to close that door.

I asked the local Ford Dealer about this and they said to replace the door control module for about $350.

Any other thoughts?
Seems like an expensive guess, unless you took it to the service department and they diagnosed it.

A more complex system would be better diagnosed. A shop manual and EVTM with a voltmeter or test light would be an approach that may be less money.

I did an online search for the switch that is inside the right sliding door on the 2004 Freestar, and talked to a Ford Parts person who let me know that the switch had gone end of life, so I searched ebay and found New OEM 1999 - 2003 Ford Windstar Sliding Door Switch XF2Z-14B367-AA. This is actually inside the rear latch on the right sliding door. I bid on it, won the bid and it was delivered on 5/4/2020 from a site in Canada. It may be the last one in captivity.

The following weekend, I disassembled the door, and removed the latch (again!) so I could get the old switch out, installed the replacement switch and latch, then tested the opening and closing of the door. It worked great (about three times), from all of the switches, then the last time I closed it, opening didn't work under switch control or manually.

SO the door is closed, and won't open. It appears that the lock button is not lifting up to unlock the door under the unlock switch control or by trying to raise the door button.

I'm back to asking if anyone has a suggestion about how to force the unlock and open my door?

Thanks,

Based on what you posted my guess is this is a new issue.

The door or any door will no open if it is locked. Based on what you have posted it sounds like the door will not unlock. Could be electrical or mechanical. Some of the electrical may be repaired outside of the door. All of the mechanical is ondie the door.

Operating the power door locks, is there any sound from inside that door?

Gaining access to the inside of the door requires interior door panel removal. That isn't as easy with the door closed as it is with the door open.
