2010 Explorer bad PCM?

882 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  kenexplorer
I have a 2010 Ford Explorer, and we had 5 codes pop up when the CEL came on. Took it to the local auto repair place (A Napa certified place) they replaced all 4 O2 sensors and an EGR, which are what the codes were 4. 2 days later, the CEL was back on, same codes. They said the EGR valve was bad, and replaced it. 3 days and boom, same codes. This last time, they said they suspect it's the PCM and thats not something they can replace because it has to be programmed at a dealership. I called our local dealership, and the service manager said he doubts it's the PCM as he rarely ever replaces them.

So here I am before y'all looking for other possible things that might be causing the issues, before I drop $1500 on a possible new PCM.

Welcome to the FFO!

I agree with the service manager at the dealership. The chances that the PCM is bad are extremely low. More PCMs are replaced in frustration because the tech does not know how or does not have access on how to diagnose electronic engine controls.
Spend the money on diagnosis from someone that knows what they are doing.

Or post the current codes here. Because the chnace of your PCM being bad with just the CEL light being on is very low
Along with the mileage, engine size and general location of vehicle
And is the vehicle drivibg poorly? If so describe
Or if not post that as well.

BTW if I did not state it before - the chances of a bad PCM are very low

The PCM on those are mounted in the firewall
Chances are you have gotten water in the connectors that feedthe PCM
As Action said low rate of going bad

I would love to know what happened with this PCM diagnosis. I have a similar 2010 explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 with 80k mi. CEL came on and fuel gauge quit working below 1/2 tank and stalled three times in 2 weeks. Mechanic replaced fuel sender which fixed gauge and stalling but CEL stayed on for P0053, P0054, P0059, P0069, P0403, P0443. Runs and drives fine. Mechanic says PCM needs replaced but dealer is backordered and I'm looking into sending mine out for repair. But this thread makes me wonder if the problem is not the PCM.
If the PCM has visible damage from water, yes it has to be replaced.

Other issues can be poor grounds or poor connections.
Do check the PCM mounting to make sure the mounting is clean and tight.

The same goes for the battery cables. Clean and tight. Along with a battery that is in good condition.

PCM has no visible damage so I'll try the other things you listed before spending the money and time on the PCM. Thanks!
