2017 Ford Explorer Sport, 48K Miles. After idling for a while and getting hot, then needing to accelerate hard, will flash the check engine light, and stop the AC. The car will accelerate very poorly until restart.
This generally happens around 4,000 RPM.
I can slowly bring the engine speed up to around 5K rpm, then accelerates OK.

Any thoughts?

Your vehicle is communicating with you. When the issue occurs it is significant enough the PCM is going to damage control and shutting non-essential things to protect the engine. This is called Limp Mode.

Pull the DT codes and postback.

Getting "hot"??

Make sure you front shutter system is opening when sitting still, idling "hot".

Yes, on acceleration, the a/c compressor shuts off temporarily.
