Hey Folks, Newbie here! Got a 95 escort wagon with a 1.9 engine. Car has lost power bad. Replaced plugs and wires, timing belt and water pump. No luck. I'm thinking I have a clogged CC. Is there any way to clean them out?? Art there 2 on this vehicle. Theres something that looks like it could be a CC withe wire gauze wrap on the exhaust pipe back about 4 foot from the engine.

To diagnose a plugged catalytic converter, you can check intake vacuum or exhaust backpressure. To check intake vacuum, connect a vacuum gauge to a vacuum port on the intake manifold. Start the engine and note the vacuum reading at idle. Then increase engine speed to about 2,500 rpm and hold steady. Normal vacuum at idle for most engines should be 18 to 22 inches Hg. When the engine speed is increased there should be a momentary drop in vacuum before it returns to within a couple of inches of the idle reading. If the vacuum reading is lower than normal and/or continues to drop as the engine runs, it probably indicates a buildup of backpressure in the exhaust. Remember, though, that intake vacuum can also be affected by retarded ignition timing and valve timing. What's more, some engines are much more sensitive to small changes in intake vacuum than others, so checking backpressure rather than intake vacuum may give you a better indication of what's going on.

The part you think is a CAT is actualy a flex pipe with a woven wire mesh around it.

Your cat is vertically mounted in the front of the engine. If you want to check it, just remove the Oxygen sensor temporarily and drive it. Yes it will be VERY LOUD but if your power is restored then the Cat is plugged. If not, then look elsewhere.

There really is no way to 'clean them out' as they don't get clogged up like a filter does.. it's a chemical reaction that takes place in there (hence the word "Catalytic") and when they over heat then can turn into a solid brick, not allowing hardly any exhaust to pass through.

If it is plugged, all you can do is replace it, and fix the cause of what plugged it up in the first place.
