96 ford contour

96 ford contour 2.o litre engine. blown head gasket replace head gasket had head reworked replaced timing belt. will not start . turns over tries to fire,,backfire occasionaly. pretty sure mechnical timing is correct, any suggestion?

My guess is that the valve timing is off. Did you do a compression check?

did compression check its low approx 80 to 90 squirt small amount of oil into cylinder raises it by 20 for each cylinder with timing light on num cylinder spark is ocuring right at top dead center,,,, should it be before top dead center? also is this enough compression for this engine to even run? it got extremely hot begining to think ring are shot
when you put the timing belt on, did you put a plate in the back of the cams? one that would go across both?
my friends and i had the same problem with ours, so we just lined the cams up with the intake plaque from a 94 mustang GT...
make sure you used the 2nd timing mark on the crank.
