Hello, Daughter's 98 Escort 120,000 miles with a small crack in the Cat Converter, got EGR code two weeks befor emissions test. I just removed the EGR and attached pipe. The EGR port was clogged bad. Maybe a pipe cleaner wide opening. I chisled it clean and used a wire brush. Sprayed TB cleaner in EGR port and in the Throtle Body and in the EGR valve. I sucked on the EGR vaccum port and it appeared to hold suction and I heared diaphragm pop up and down. I felt some suction from the vaccum hose.

Well.... was felling good and put it all back. Car drove pretty good and actually felt better. Drove about 25 mikes and the Check Engine light came back on. Very bad feeling. So now out of time for emission test and now out of ideas.

Wht do you all suggest next??

I was able to fix my other daughter's Taurus with EGR. Ihd to remove the Throttle Body and there was a channl at the opening where the TB conncts and it was clogged. I cleaned and all was good. I don't think the 98 Escort has this.

I really need some help, please. Thanks, Michael

    Greetings:

I am in the same situation with my 97 F 250. Haven't worked on it yet, but this is where I am starting. http://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford/4.6L-5.4L/how-to-test-the-egr-system-1 This info is not specific to my engine, but I hope it will at least be a guide to success. I hope the same for you. Or maybe there will be other guides in the web site for our vehicles. I have just been too busy to research further. Good luck.

There are more "things" than the EGR valve that will set the EGR code...been there done that. Get a manual that shows everything in the EGR chain....Bill
