OK so the wipers on my 82 Fairmont Futura dont work. They are pretty picky about em workin to pass an inspection so I need to fix em. While I have my head up under the dash rewiring my horn I hit the wiper switch and they start working (the key is in the on position), so I am all like cool, one less thing to F with. So I start the car, and they stop, huh? I shut it off and leave the key in the on position and they start working again. So basically when the key is on but the engine isnt running they work when the engine is running they dont. Any ideas?

That's a definite puzzler.
Attached are some wiring schematics for the Fairmont Futura. It shows all power comes from the ignition switch through a circuit breaker - 16 amp. Check for voltage at that breaker and at the wiper motor in run engine off and run engine running. Does the voltage change?

yeah, because even when the engine is running, the key stays in the on position... does it work when you turn it back to accessory position? I'm with Roy on the breaker, but something in the circuit would be causing it while the engine is charging...

I had a problem with the wipers. They would turn on when the headlights were turned on. It was caused by a ground wire not making a connection. Took me about 20 minutes to find it. Follow all the grounds to their ends, and remove, clean the metal under the wire down to silver, reattach.
