On my 96 LX the automatic seatbelts...They will engage (travel to B pillar) when I close door but, on several occasions when I open the door from inside, they retract (travel to A pillar) 25% of the time. I have rolled the window down and opened the door using the outside door handle and still won't retract. What and where is a switch that activates the motion?

The spring mechanism is most likely just dirty. You need to pull the trim off the inside of "B" pillar to see it...the place where the seat belt disappears into is the "B" pillar.

The auto seat belt module is signaled by the door switch when the door is opened or closed. It checks to see which limit switch is closed, telling it the location of the seat belt, whether it is forward or aft. Then the module will energize the seat belt motor to either drive it forward to let you out or back to retain. So, you could have a problem with the door switch, limit switch, poor contacts, or module.
