1998 Club Wagon will not start in Park but will start in Neutral. Also the shifter seems really loose. Are these two issues one in the same? How do you fix it?

You'll have a digital transmission range sensor attached to the driver's side of the trans, near the bottom, about in the middle from front to back.

That acts as a neutral safety switch, and only allows the engine to crank while in neutral or park.

I don't know what the linkage looks like, but I suspect that there may be an adjustment for it.

they probably are the same problem. like poppy said you might have to adjust the linkage. if you put it in reverse, and then throw it into park HARD, with engine off, and the brake on, see if it makes any difference. or jiggle it around. what's wrong with starting it in neutral?

I'll bet it's loose under the dash. Picture = 1000 words :)
It's on an F series, pretty sure your E series is the same.
The torx screws come loose.

The column shift is controlled by a 2 piece mechanism.
The shifter and an pot metal lever that is attached the the inner column and they break often.
Leading to a sloppy shift or a no shift issue.
