Well, you could try a Cold Air Intake and an aftermarket cat-back exhaust, but the mileage your getting is about as good as it gets for these trucks with that engine. The place I used to work has a couple F550's with v10's and they were lucky to see 9 mpg.
i'll have to agree with zephyrman. you could try doing a tune-up (plugs/wires, air and fuel filters, clean MAF sensor and throttle body) if its been a while since the last one, but i doubt you'll see much better than 9 or 10.
you can put a v8 in it... or diesel...
I have an 05' X V10 4" lift 35's with 3.73's everything is stock and normal driving condition's I get 10-11mpg if I take it easy I can get 13-14mpg and when towing 11,000 #'s I get 5-6mpg. I noticed yours is lifted, did you get the speedo calibrated for the bigger tires, that would only account for probly 1mpg inaccuracy but hey thats's 9mpg your getting now. I'd give her a tune-up, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil and filter, etc. And do you know what gears it's got if somebody put 4.88's in it or something before it belonged to you then those are for power not mileage.
thanks for the help. I just bought it last month.Yes it has a lift 4". It has a k&n air filter and air tube( i've cleaned it and oiled it), it has a airaid throttle body spacer, also has a headers with 3" exhaust. yes te speedo is right . dont know about the gears havent had the time to look at that yet, think they've been changed the rpm seems to run a touch higher then what my truck did and the truck had 37" tires an 9" of lift. I got the excursion because my family grew, I have 3 kids and my girlfriend has 4, thats 7 kid and my crew cab wasnt big enough for all of us and needed something to pull my mud truck.
Clean the injectors with a dedicated injector cleaning system such as ford PM-5
OT: Phantom, I've never used that injector cleaner PM-5. How does it compare to Lucas FI cleaner? or any of the other aftermarket stuff.
Sorry for hi-jacking your thread.
It is a really strong cleaner you mix with gas and run from a tank straight to the fuel rail and block off the return to the fuel tank.If you mix it too strong it wont run on it.GM has a comparable product but I dont know the part #.You can not put this cleaner in the tank because it can damage the fuel pump internals.
Thanks, sounds like a plan....:)
There is another option to try to improve fuel economy. When all else fails, and you've done all the basics to try to improve it, you can install a tuner in your truck. These things are programmable and can help in most cases. I would suggest a Diablo tuner, as I have seen these installed on some of my customers vehicles and it helps with performance and fuel economy. Now this isn't just a plug and play setup, you have to go in and try different setups on it, and they are not cheap. A Diablo will cost you a few hundred bucks, but in the long run, could pay for itself. And no, I don't sell them, just saying.

What is the maintence story on this SUV?

How many miles?

Have the O2 sensors ever been replaced, fuel filter?
It has 76,000 miles on it. All I know is what I changed on it after i got it. I was under it today and theres no catalytic converter or o2 there. It has headers on it and theres o2s there on both sides, how many o2s should it have? I cant find any wires for one where the cat should be and figured there should be one there after the cat, am I right on that?
There should be 3 o2 sensors. 2 pre cat and 1 post. Your probably hurting gas mileage with the exhaust mods without a tune for it.

I have a 2004 X with the ypipe fix and a diablo tune on 91 oct and I can get 17mpg at 70mph. 5.4l v8 4x4.
have a new cat with o2 bung in it coming. hope this helps
