Hey all, i bought new bed, doors, hood, fenders for my 79 F150. They are all a dark blue color, my cab is Red tho. I was thinking of doing the paint myself using Maaco, or something like that. How do i find what exact color i have so i can match paint?

Hey there BoomDiggity,

If I recall correctly, there were 2 dark blues Ford used in 1979 - Bright Blue (3J), and Dark Blue Metallic (3L).

you can take it to a paint supplier and get them to do a computer reading on one or more of your parts.....dupont and ppg has it as well as others

you're saying i would physically take one of the new parts to the store? like a fender or somethin?

take one of the parts that has the color you want on it and they put a color reader on it like they do with house paints. and yup a fender works... they just need a spot the size of a 3x5 card that is somewhat flat

I would stay away from Maaco, I have never seen I car or truck paint job last very long from there... .Just my opinion.

There is many body shops around. Maybe asked your local parts house that sells auto finishes for some places. They may even tell ya who does the best work for a fair price.

I'm assuming you own a shop?? haha

I have the truck stripped down to just the cab, did the body rust work, and now i just need to figure out who can do the paint of the cab for a reasonable price. It's a old truck im not looking for show room quality, but i also heard from a few people Maaco isn't good either.

it does depend... they are independently owned.... but the materials are a big part of the quality... I don't own a shop but I do work on the side.. I have done many show cars.... you can do a little hunting in your area.... ask around and look at the cars that shops have done.... and if you can wait, look at when they look slow and work out a deal... sometimes you can drop it off and tell them your not in a real rush... pm your # and I can talk more

Poppa OC always used Sherwin Williams industrial enamel and a good clean brush, but he drank a bit...
