Rust protectant

Hey guys, I currently livei n Tennessee but go to school in Dayton, OH. I'll be bringing up my old 1968 Ford Rancher(completely rust-free). I was told to go to a shop up there that can apply rust protectant, such as Ziebart. I'm just not sure what works best as far as protecting from all that salt I'll encounter when driving up in Ohio. Any suggestions?

To be quite honest. The best thing to do to combat the corrosive elements of salt on the road. Is move to a place that doesn't need road salt.. Other than that. It's just something you have to deal with living in the northern states. undercoating will help. But there is no total protection from road salt..

i disagree. have you ever used or heard of por-15? its expensive but it works great on frames, axles, suspension parts, etc. as for body panels, yeah, undercoating will only slow the process. the only other thing you could do is avoid driving it in the winter if that's an option.

totally agree about the not driving it in winter thing. if you see snow, it's a no-go. i usually wait till after the first good rain of spring to take mine back out...

also monty, have you used the POR-15 on your fairmont? i'm just looking to see how much to get.
I have not heard of POR-15. I researched Ziebart and all the reviews were good except that it can crack up and leave room for moisture to leak in. I honestly would not depend completely on an undercoating, but I was hoping that combined with a nice car wash every week would keep the salt from making any serious impact on my car. I'll research POR-15 because Ziebart is expensive as it is, but it's a better alternative rather than having rust on my currently rust-free car.
my 63 has almost no rust underneath... here in Baltimore they salt the crap out of the roads for the non driving folk.... it has at least a 1/4 inch or more of undercoating I am a believer in you can't use too much.... Ziebart does a nice job in Bmore you can also use truck bed liner in a spray can, roll on or take it to a place that sprays them on... very reasonable for the protection it gives
