I do not get 12 volts to the little connector at the starter relay (solinoid) when I turn the key, and it doesn't crank, but when I jump the solinoid it does crank and start .

It would really help if you posted the
Year, Make, Model and Engine size.

Sounds like the solenoid is shot...or the wire in-between the two.

If you jumped the solenoid and it started, the solenoid is done.

What trans?
Does it have RAP (Remote Anti-theft Personality) module?

Could be the Neutral safety switch (auto trans) or Clutch Pedal Position switch (Manual trans).

if it was the neutral safety switch, it would never attempt to start...

there is the possibility of a defective solinoid. you should be able to bring the new one in, and swap it for another just in case...

it could also be a problem with the ignition switch itself...

Is there a way to test the solinoid ? If it was the rap system , would it start when I jump the solinoid ? When I turn the key to start it , all I hear is a click from the relay in the big fuse box located in the engine compartment .

you can check that. i'm not too familiar with the newer style (after 96) but there is a fuse in the older trucks for the ignition. where is the solenoid located on your truck?

It IS possible your new solenoid is junk, I've run into that more than once.

The click that I`m getting when I turn the key ,is coming from inside the cab , probably a fuse making contact , that`s all I get . I`ve also tried boosting it and I get the same effect .

I'll post up the wire schematic once I know what trans and if it has RAP or not.

Oh heck, here's all three.

It is NOT you solinoid.
You stated that you do not get 12 volts to the little connector fo the starter relay.

Therefore it is in the circuit prior to the starter relay.

Could be ignition switch, transmission range sensor, a bad wire from the ignition switch to the relay, or something I don't know about.
We'll need to get a wiring diagram up here.

BTW... the clicking you hear in the fuse box when you turn the key is probably the PCM relay or maybe the fuel pump relay.

Poppy, I agree, "no power to small wire"...it ain't the solenoid.....yet.
That's where I was headed with it. There are 3 wire diagrams.......need answer from the OP.
