As I was removing the rear driver's frame rail, I occurred to me that the rear section of the car would be left unsupported and therefore prone to shifting. I have the coupe frame rails to replace them with, but some trimming would be needed to accommodate the inner frame rails. So, I would need to at least mock up the frame rails to get the trimmed dimension.

Yes. Actually, there were two donor cars. One had a roof (the rear half), the other a convertible (front half). Both had minimal (to me) rusted areas. I had them shipped to me here in central Hellinois from Texas.

If you know anyone that has an original transmission tunnel section let me know. Mine had a fiberglass shifter tunnel added and I just put the T5 in and it's dead center and no need for the bulge. Not to mention the guy butchered the access hole for the shift linkage. Can't reach in there without gloves! Might not get your hand back. LOL

I probably will. Mine had a hack job as well, but I can repair it. I'm going T-5 as well with S-10 shifter. Where are you located?

It would be nice if both of you updated your profile with location. (City State)
I am assuming both of you are in the US.

So, I hacked out the torque box on the driver's side and removed the rest of the amateur floor pans in the rear. These were flat sheet that was a combination of welded and brazed in. I initially left the spring hanger for location reasons. Then, I found the rivets were in the same location for convertibles and hard tops. In the bottom pic here you can see the rotten inner frame rail and surrounding areas.

SO, it was about this time that I decided to strip the whole car out. It obviously has issues and the entire donor front end was looking like a better option than fixing the existing one which was slathered in tar and rusty as all hell

. (Note: if you have a car plastered with tar, you can get it off rather easy by using a spade bit on an air hammer when it's cold out. It shatters it.)

For some - when it's cold out - is not a frequent event.

It is supposed to cool down later next week. 102 today

It was 32 at 7 am here. We're up to a blistering 38 now. Here's a couple more shots of the dismantling of the front end and the damage to the radiator cross member from the PO. The one pic shows how I made a rudimentary puller with a stack of washers for the rusted bumper bracket bolts after I cut the heads of them off.

Cooler day today.
87 at 10am
With the high predicted to be only 99

Not the kind of temps one could scrape off under coat. But around here the kind of rust shown in this thread doe not exist at all. Unless it is imported.

The removal of all the front suspension went well. I got to use my spring compressor again. It's seldom used, but always there. Since, I'm going with the V8 suspension, I'm not reusing any of the old stuff. The first pic shows the removed tar with the previously mentioned air chisel. I believe it was around 30 some degrees that day.

So, I left off at skinning the front end. As I was removing parts, I kept noticing more rust (1st pic comparison) plus I had the damaged area (apparent from the second and third pics) to deal with.

Thanks to all of you who commented and viewed. I hope you find this as interesting as I do. We're finally hitting the 70's this week with a crap load of rain coming. Since my significant other is having back issues, we are staying at her place for a while. My progress on the Falcon is slow or crawling right now. The Falcon is at my place, but the Mustang (see avatar) is at her place. It's going to get a 5 speed while I'm over there. So, here's a couple pics of the progression to get you by. It was about this time that I decided to clip the car and started prepping the front donor piece. (yes, that's snow)
