Im getting a whining noise from the top middle passenger side of engine area.
I can't tell if it goes away when rev'ing or driving as it doesn't get much louder, but you can hear it when idling.

I changed the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley. no help.

I'm thinking it might be something vacuum? but not sure..

see video for noise. taken from inside the doghouse.

and I also put a stethoscope on a bunch of things and it seems like its coming from the black plastic valve cover. here's an audio recording of the steth earphone held up to the phone mic. I touch the end to the valve cover twice, you can hear the noise get louder..

    anyone have any ideas?

thx for the reply. unfortunately, no, thats not it. just went out again and gave that a shot. the sound is def coming from the valve cover. I stethoscoped the driver side cover and there is no noise. but passenger side definitely has a noise coming from it...
but im not sure what would be causing the noise..

I considered that. I looked up some other videos of cam phaser noises and the noise didn't really sound the same. cam phaser sounded more knock'y , this sounds more whiney.. but I certainly could be wrong

Whining noise on a modular engine is just not common.
Ticking, clicking or knocking yes. Or something that makes a sound, stops and then makes the sound again in rapid order.

Whining is more like a continous sound which is not typical.
    Other whining causes -
    Alternator
    Water pump
    serpinetine belt

But those items are in the front of the engine

Oh yeah .... you may have something there!

So to recap - whining sound, under right valve cover in the center of the cover, correct?

Oh and I forgot, harder to hear at higher RPM with the other engine sounds.

    Questions -
    How many miles on engine?
How long has thins been going on?
Can you hear it with the hood closed and doghouse on?

Right. kinda seem like its more near back of cover but hard to tell.
yea you can't really hear it when driving, but when slow to stop light you can. So it doesn't get louder as I rev up..

    135k miles.
Been going on since like Feb. I changed the idler pulley, tensioner pulley and serp belt. I think there was some noise from those as they sounded a little rough when spinning by hand.
    But other noise continued.

Yea you can hear it through the doghouse essentially.

i'd say the last 20sec of the video are pretty representative of the sound.

Suggestion (after listening to the attachments)

There really isn't much under the valve cover that is going to make that kind of sound.
ONe other question, has the PCV been replaced?

Look for the IAC. On the back of the throttle body.

See if you can hear the sound coming from that.

My other guess is the sound is coming from something else and being transmitted to the valve cover. I really don't think it is coming from under the cover.
