trying to find an aftermarket 3rd break light assembly for my 03 windstar. the 3 bulb sockets have started to melt and ford does not make them anymore. called the local parts store and no one has anything.
does anyone know where I can get a new replacement?

I was lucky enough to replace my 3rd Brake Light Assembly in my 1998 Windstar when I saw the lens starting to melt. The bulb that is specified in the user's manual burns too hot and causes the melt. I found an LED replacement for the three bulbs at https://www.superbrightleds.com/. They have a number of different bulbs available.
One weird problem, though - my remote door locks stopped working. One evening, I went out in the dark, and saw the 3 LEDs flashing in a rippling pattern. I replaced the center bulb with an incandescent of a lower power than the original, and the CHMSL worked fine and so did the door locks, right up until I sold the van last year.

It appears that there are bigger issues. found an led replacement fixture and when it was wired up the led's glow when the pedal is not pressed down. changed the location of the ground from the harness to the body and it is brighter. checked with the meter and there is 9-10 volts across the hot to the 3rd light all the time and 5-6 to the socket on the side brake lights. this van also has lost the rear ac blower that no mater what parts have been replaced it does not work.
think it may be time to replace the rear control module? other than replacing the rear module not sure where to start looking for the mystery voltage. any thoughts?

You may have a poor ground circuit for the 3rd brake light and may be the same for the control module.

Diagnosing the problem may be more time consuming than replacing parts and yet the results may be better.

Follow the current in and out for each circuit. The brake light circuit may be easy enough to do with out a manual. It is doubtful that the rear AC circuit can be diagnosed with out manuals.
